Why Every Man Needs a Vision for His Life
Ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels? You can’t hit what you can’t see.
In 2014, I wrote my first vision. I had just started working with a coach who asked me to think bigger – not just about career goals, but about life. 'What do you want to experience?' he asked. 'What kind of person do you want to be known as?'
At the time, my reality was a million miles away from what I was writing down. I was battling self-doubt daily. But with my coach, we broke it down. If I wanted to make a million dollars, we calculated how many supplements I needed to sell. If I wanted to be a mental health speaker for Nike, I committed to sharing content every single day.
Those daily steps became my focus. And over time, the small actions compounded. Fast forward eight years, and I’m still self-employed, choosing how I spend my days and who I work with. That reality didn’t happen by accident – it was built, step by step.
Why Men Feel Stuck
As I’ve been reviewing recent 1:1 coaching applications, one thing has become glaringly clear: Many men are moving through life without a clear vision for what they truly want.
They leave school with a goal to earn a living and one day provide for a family. But as that time arrives, they’re so consumed with surviving that they haven’t had a chance to step back and reassess.
The desire to protect and provide becomes all-consuming. This is when stress, overwhelm, and overworking start to fracture relationships. They feel trapped – torn between cutting back at work and giving more of themselves to their families.
We could blame the system for not teaching kids how to create a compelling vision for their lives… but they do, in a way. 'Get the good job, buy a house, start a family' – we all know that script.
But what’s missing is the personal exploration – the moment you step back and ask, 'What do I really want?'
When I wrote that first vision in 2014, it felt like a fantasy. A million dollars? Becoming a speaker for Nike? That wasn’t me – at least, that’s what I thought.
I remember staring at the paper and feeling like a fraud. Who was I to write that down? I had barely scraped through school, had no business background, and was working odd jobs just to stay afloat.
But my coach kept pushing: 'What else do you want? What would a perfect day look like? What would a life that excites you feel like?'
I started to let go of the fear of being unrealistic. I wrote that I wanted to have time freedom – to wake up and decide what to do with my day. I wanted to work with people who inspired me. I wanted to help men who felt lost, like I did.
That vision was the spark that lit the fire. But writing it down was just the start. I had to start living it, one action at a time.
The 3 Steps to Start Creating Your Vision
Write It Down:
Take 30 minutes today to write down what you want your life to look like in 5 years. Think beyond just finances.
Prompt: What do you want to experience? How do you want your relationships to feel? What kind of person do you want to be known as?
Example: In 2014, I wrote that I wanted to make a million dollars and be a mental health speaker for Nike. At the time, it felt impossible, but the act of writing it down made it real.
Break It Down:
Once you’ve got the vision, reverse-engineer it. What needs to happen day by day to move toward it?
Example: To make that million dollars, my coach and I calculated how many supplements I needed to sell daily. To become a speaker, I committed to sharing daily content.
Action: Identify one key action for each part of your vision – business, relationships, health – and turn it into a daily habit.
Live It Daily:
Your vision won’t happen overnight, but you can start living it in small ways right now.
Example: Eight years after writing my first vision, I wake up every day and get to choose who I work with and how I spend my time. That reality didn’t happen by accident – it was built, step by step.
Action: Reflect each night: 'Did I take one action today that moved me closer to my vision?'
Client Success Story
Recently, I worked with a client named Tom. Tom was in his mid-30s, working 60-hour weeks and feeling like a ghost in his own life. He was a great provider but a disconnected husband and father.
When we sat down to map out his vision, he struggled to articulate what he wanted beyond 'more money' and 'less stress.' We broke it down. Tom wanted to be home for dinner every night. He wanted to coach his son’s rugby team.
By breaking those goals down into daily actions – leaving work by 5 pm, Tom started to see his life take shape in a way that aligned with his vision. Six months later, he was hitting those small goals daily, feeling more fulfilled and connected than ever.
