What Does Your Life Teach Others, Just by How You Live?
It’s a question I ask myself often.
Not out of ego, but out of responsibility. Because the truth is, people learn more from what we embody than from what we say.
Growing up, I dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. That door closed quickly, and with no burning desire to go to university or pick up a trade, I felt completely lost.
I was stuck between who I thought I’d be… and who I actually was.
The only path I saw was the one society hands to all of us:
Go to school
Get good grades
Go to university
Get a job
Buy the house
Work hard
Retire
But here’s the thing, nothing about that lit me up.
What scared me more than failure was the idea of settling. Becoming the guy who:
Wakes up dreading his day.
Lives for the weekend.
Works 48 weeks a year for 4 weeks off.
Slowly erodes into someone he no longer recognises.
That wasn’t a life. That was a slow death of who I was meant to be.
And I knew if I walked that path, I’d not only lose myself, I’d never have the capacity to show up in a relationship the way I wanted to.
So I made a different choice
I decided to create a life I actually wanted to live:
Space to train when my energy is at its peak.
Freedom to connect with friends when it mattered most.
The ability to design days that worked for me, not just for a paycheck.
It hasn’t been easy. There have been risks, doubts, and plenty of times I’ve questioned whether it’s worth it.
But I always come back to one filter:
If I were watching myself live each day, would I be proud? Would I be inspired by the direction I’m heading?
That’s my definition of success.
Not how many boxes I tick. Not how “safe” I play it. But how I feel when my head hits the pillow at night.
If I could go back and whisper something to the younger version of me, the guy who felt confused, stuck, and unsure it would be this:
The path you were told to follow isn’t the only path available. If it doesn’t feel right, find another way. You can create a life filled with meaning, momentum, and adventure. You just have to believe it’s possible, and then live boldly enough to prove it.
Take a moment today to reflect:
If someone was watching the replay of your life, what lesson would they learn?
Would they see a man settling or a man living with intention?
That awareness alone could be the first step towards rewriting your path.
